Duplex stainless steels are called "duplex ", because they have a two-phase microstructure - the austenite phase is like "islands " surrounded by the ferritic phase. Duplex stainless steels are used for: pumps, the chemical industry, fittings, offshore.
Other information:
Duplex stainless steels are about twice as strong as regular austenitic or ferritic stainless steels. Duplex stainless steels exhibit very good corrosion cracking resistance (SCC).
